First Edition; (viii), 228 pages, woodcut printer's device on the title page, original black cloth with gilt titling along the spine, a fine copy in the dust jacket designed by Frank Wakefield - the jacket is printed on thick stock paper and spirit varnished, it is price clipped with the stamp 'Price in Canada $3.75' at the top of the front flap.
The colophon on the final unnumbered page reads, 'Three Thousand copies of this book have been printed from Intertype Garamond by the Collegiate Press, George Banta Publishing Company, Menasha, Wisconsin. It is composed in Linotype Caledonia and printed on White Winnebago Eggshell. The cloth is Holliston Novelex.'
The bibliography records 3047 copies as the total edition the 47 copy difference being explained as printer's overruns.
H.P. Lovecraft's verdict, quoted on the rear flap of the dust jacket reads, 'None strikes the note of cosmic horror so well as Clark Ashton Smith. In sheer daemonic strangeness and fertility of conception, Mr Smith is perhaps unexcelled by any other writer, dead or living.'
