Gerard Bhengu was born on 6 September 1910 at the Mariannhill mission station in Centecow, Natal . He was educated at the Roman Catholic mission school of Esibomvwini in Centecow, where his talent was discovered.
From 1926 to 1931, Bhengu made 150 sketches documenting rural tribal life in Centecow for Dr. Max Kohler. Kohler used some of these drawings to illustrate his ethnographic and medical publications.
From 1940 to 1949 he painted scenes of everyday Zulu life and portraits of black people. These paintings were sold in the Payne Brothers department store in West Street, Durban.
He illustrated Zulu stories for Phyllis Savory's Bantu Fireside Tales (1958). In the 1960s he illustrated a book about his own life and work, also written by Phyllis Savory. (wikipedia)
