From the Preface by Hans Fransen: In his standard work on early South African art published in 1952, A. Gordon-Brown in his entry on Otto Landsberg could only include a few biographical data on this well-known 19th century public figure. Of Landsberg’s artistic work, however, he had to admit that no works had been traced in South African collections. Then, in 1956 the Potchefstroom Museum acquired by bequest a considerable number of Landsberg’s works. This was followed in 1974 when the South African National Gallery purchased four carefully selected topographical water-colours as being representative of his best work. The appearance of this book by Simon de Villiers finally completes the recognition which Landsberg’s work, unknown barely twenty years ago, deserves amidst the handful of merit-worthy artists of his time.
