A handwritten note on the second free endpaper states:
Edition de Luxe. Copy No.1 bound in full morocco.
In an accompanying letter dated 7th June 1984 Richard Sawyer, son of Charles Sawyer, then head of the firm of Chas. J. Sawyer, writes: 'I have had a word with my father about the "edition de luxe" of Gordon-Brown's Pictorial Africana and the story is a follows: It was possible to have them bound in full Morocco, or in half Morocco if required, but this was only done to order and no more than twenty-five were bound. Although it was called the "edition de luxe" no limitation was put on it, the only limitation is the number of copies which were printed of the book itself which was 2000. The handwriting of which you sent me a photostat is not my father's.'
168 pages, frontispiece and many black & white plates, full blue morocco, titled gilt on the spine and with a gilt vignette of a springbok on the upper cover, top edge gilt, a very good copy.
