A valuable guide to travelling around the Peninsula at the time. It provides detailed descriptions of the roads, but also the attractions that one would be able to view when visiting the suburbs of Cape Town and environs. One cannot but notice how wooded and sparsely populated the Cape was at this time. Chapman's Peak Road, for example, is described in some detail and must have been quite an adventure to traverse, with the road consisting of gravel with "sheer walls of rock towering to great heights above, while the sea laps against rocks far below". (p. 17) In Somerset West the car driver had to beware of ox-wagons, whilst in Stellenbosch there was a hotel where "afternoon tea may be partaken of" by the dusty driver (p. 75). Another time, another world.
