Wood-engraved portrait frontispiece to vol.I, title vignettes and numerous small wood-engraved illustrations, all by John Thompson, after Stothard, Harvey and others. (Some light spotting, occasionally heavier to first and last few leaves). Later circa-1900 red half morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with elaborate decoration built up from rules and small tools, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt (discoloration to covers, light scuffing to spines and extremities). Provenance: gift inscription dated Feb 1st 1906.
