Editors in their preface to the second edition.The first edition was published in the Transactions of the South African Philosophical Society volume V, part I, 1888 and contained 36 plates. This edition was edited by Harriet M.L. Bolus and Alice M. Greene, the publication being delayed by the First World War. 'All the species recorded from the Cape Peninsula are figured here except Acrolophia sphaerocarpa (schltr. and Bolus) and Pterygodium bifidum (Schltr.) of which no specimens have been found by us or by any other living collector to our knowledge.'
