'The Pace of the Ox, a life of Paul Kruger, was originally published in 1937. It was a pioneering work, the first full-length biography of Paul Kruger in English.
The Boer President, famous during his own day as a national hero to his own people and dour opponent of British imperialism, has been largely forgotten with the passing of the years or written off as a pathetic failure. Marjorie Juta's work, based on considerable research, brought him to life again. Separating fact from fiction, the author described events in their proper sequence and against a correct historical background. Her book largely contributed to restore the balance.
Marjorie Juta was the first to understand Kruger's greatness of character. Her presentation is intensely dramatic and often moving. She paints a man with a rough exterior but the inner tenderness of an Oliver Cromwell, which escaped most of his contemporaries.' - editor's note
