First year of publication: 12 monthly parts totalling 444 pages plus one index leaf, each with pictorial paper covers, some parts are frayed and repaired with tape, illustrated throughout, contained in a fold-down cover with gilt titling and decoration on the upper cover, a very good set.

'The magazine was aimed at the Boer families in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. It positioned itself as a 'wholesome' family magazine, blending education, entertainment and nationalism written in high Dutch. This journal was part of the effort to maintain Dutch cultural ties and high-quality literature in the Boer Republics. It contains articles on the Great Trek and
the founding of the Boer Republics as well as household tips, fashion from Europe, and religious reflections. Also it serialised novels, poetry, and short stories by Dutch and local authors.

'Ons Tijdschrift played a pivotal role in the 'First Language Movement' (Eerste Taalbeweging). While it used Dutch, it paved the way for the later explosion of Afrikaans media. Many of the writers who contributed to this magazine later became the founding fathers of Afrikaans literature. It was eventually succeeded and eclipsed by later publications such as Die Huisgenoot (founded in 1916). It continued in publication from 1896 to 1901.
