'Many persons, who simply read the sections of the Gold Act, have no comprehensive idea of it. The general view is lost in a mass of detail. It has therefore been thought desirable to prefix a concise summary of the main provisions of the Act, in simple language, so that he who runs may read. To this there has been added a short analysis of the alterations effected by this Act, as compared with the Gold Law (No. 15, 1898) hitherto in force. Decisions have been stated as briefly as possible. Previous commentators on the Gold Law have thought it well to state cases with all their details. The object which has here been kept in view is to present leading principles, which may serve for guidance in the future.' - Preface to the first edition, September, 1908.
