Compliments slip from CEO of Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd. Robin A. Plumbridge laid down on half-title page.
'Gold Fields of South Africa was founded in London during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. As the British Empire approached its zenith, its greatest proponent, Cecil Rhodes, in founding with Charles Rudd, a goldmining company in February 1887, might almost have been offering it as a salute to a celebration.
A century later Gold Fields is the oldest mining house on the Rand and the only one, born in the nineteenth century, that has survived intact to the present day. And while in 1887 it was a foreign company operating in Kruger's South African Republic, today in the Republic of South Africa it is an independent South African company.
Gold Fields' contribution to the country has been immense. It supplies some 10 percent of the free world's gold and its great mines such as Driefontein and Kloof, will be producing far into the next century.' - editor's note
