This is a rare copy of the author\'s massive (x + 634 pp) single-sided cyclostyled typescript PhD thesis awarded by the then University of the Orange Free State in 1975.
[Pieter Oosthuizen was the author of the 1987 work \"Boer War Memorabilia\" (see Lot 108 of the present auction).]
In the foreword to his thesis, Oosthuizen notes that there was previously no book on the general situation of Boer prisoners-of-war. Instead, there were diaries and memoirs of individuals, but (translated) \"knowledge of the many facets of their treatment and activities\" remained a forgotten chapter in our history.
As well as the five South African camps, 61 overseas camps were researched - in Bermuda, St Helena, Ceylon and India.
