First Edition: 35 pages of letterpress, hand coloured lithographic frontispiece, additional hand coloured title page and 19 hand coloured plates each with tissue guards, original brown straight-grained cloth, covers blind stamped and titled and decorated in gilt on the upper cover and spine, neatly recased, all edges gilt, a very good copy.

Printed at the top of the title page: Dedicated by permission to Major-General Sir Henry Somerset, C.B., K.H., Etc.

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 932: The author deprecates any serious criticism of the letterpress of this volume, the memoranda for which, it is remarked, were put together during a long and severe illness, and were compiled merely to "set off the pattern of the plates." ... The illustrations are extremely humorous, one of them depicting "the Cape Town Levy," which is described in the letterpress as being composed of "rascals of all sorts."
