This is a copy of the sought-after second impression of 552 pp, but the author revised the work continuously until it made 769 pp by the 18th "impression" [ie edition] of 1902, which was reprinted twice more. This is an excellent copy.
The blue cloth-boards, with blind-stamped rules to both faces and gilt rules and lettering to the spine, are lightly bumped at the extremities and the spine is lightly sunned. The binding is tight but has lost some of its flexibility. Both endpapers are cracked but the hinges are firm. There is a minor crack between sections S and T. All page edges are rough-cut. There is a signature and "Nov 1900" on the flyleaf. The x + 552 pp of text, appendix and index + 12 pp of publisher's announcements are unmarked and unfoxed. The 5 folding maps are correctly positioned and in very good conditon with no tears.
