London: Bossage & Co. and Geneva: A. Cherbuliez, 1832.
First edition, two volumes in one (pp. xxxvi, 227; v, 119). Duodecimo (18 cm) in red half leather over marbled boards, five raised bands, gilt titles to spine; marbled endpapers, ribbon place marker, reproduction of early map of Geneva.
The geography of this part of Switzerland proved attractive to quite a few influential people, among them Calvin and Napoleon, and Brydges' long poem parades these worthies for the reader, making certain of his own place in the parade. The ODNB entry for Brydges is a long one as Brydges was absorbed throughout his life with by an expensive but unsuccessful pursuit of a claim to the long-vacant title Baron Chandos and had only just enough time and wealth to play in the bibliomania which seized many of the wealthy of his day, among whom were counted the duke of Roxburghe and the second Earl Spencer. The Lake features several engraved portraits of Brydges' ancestors as well as a sketch of the Brydges- Chandos coat of arms which are offered in support of his absorbing, quixotic enterprise.
Tips worn; otherwise a fine copy.
