Helen Martins was born in Nieu-Bethesda in 1897, leaving for the Transvaal in 1919 to teach, returning to Nieu-Bethesda in 1928. After her parent's deaths in the 1940's she started to transform the house that was left to her. In the years that followed, Helen grew more and more estranged from the outside world and became known as a reclusive outsider artist. She died in 1976. The Owl House is her opus magnum.
