'Usually the rifle dominates the conflict between men and wild animals; but with Guy Muldoon, as he proved in his previous book of thrilling adventures with big game, Leopards in the Night, the most powerful weapons for jungle adventure are cunning, patience and experience. For his task, as an Agricultural Officer in Northern Nyasaland, was to drive a scattered herd of marauding elephants away from the cultivated lands where they came for food into a National reserve; and it was a task which not only required judgement, skill and nerve, but which was characterised by frustration and excited by danger at every turn. Against him and his small band of native assistants stood two gargantuan adversaries: the shambling, uncomprehending herd and the black sweeping distances of the African night. In his favour were patience and determination. That he was constantly winning the battle, even against the terrors and superstitions of the natives, is no less astonishing than the tension he creates in his expert book.

These are tales of discovery: of the ingrained habits of animals and men; of loyalty and sacrifice, cowardice and stupidity in white men and natives alike; of devotion, insane courage and sheer cussedness in elephant, leopard and hyena. And it is the story of a hunter, not a proud but a patient man.'
