New York: printed by W.E. Hilton, 1862. Small octavo (7 x 4 1/2in; 178 x 114mm). Pp. [1-]6-336. Wood-engraved illustrations. (Occasional light spotting). Original wavy grained cloth, the covers paneled in blind, the flat spine divided into compartments by blind rules, lettered in gilt in the second compartment (spine somewhat faded, extremities slightly bumped, some creasing to covers [see images]).
An excellent copy of this wide-ranging work on women’s health and well-being: no other copies are currently for sale. The opinions, explanations and ‘cures’ are no worse than are to be expected from a mid-century work of this type. Sensible is often followed by just plain wrong or and even (sometimes) horrific. Dedicated ‘To Woman, who, with patient suffering and tender care watches over our infantile helplessness, this little volume is respectfully dedicated…’
