From the Introduction by J.N. Eloff: 'Pelargoniums, often erroneously referred to as 'Geraniums' are known throughout the world for their horticultural potential. Any visitor to Europe must be impressed by the way in which our pelargoniums have taken over the window boxes in millions of homes. Most of the cultivars are a result of hybridization, the most popular ones being those easiest to grow and those with the most striking flowers. However, some are grown for other qualities, e.g. Pelargonium graveolens (Rose-scented pelargonium) is an important factor in the production of 'geranium oil' which is used as a substitute for the expensive attar of roses in the perfume trade. On account of this worldwide interest in pelargoniums, Volume 1 was translated into German and into French.

‘The third volume follows the same pattern as the previous two. A further 50 species are described. The nomenclatural exposition of each species is followed by a formal diagnostic description of the plant. These descriptions are detailed and straightforward, with a limited use of technical terms. Areas of distribution are discussed, together with notes on historical backgrounds and cultivation. Growth requirements have been personally studied by the authors and in most cases the plants used have been grown and observed in the Botanic Garden at the University of Stellenbosch. Each species is accompanied by a magnificent watercolour painting by Ellaphie Ward-Hilhorst, who must rank among the top botanical artists in the country. There are also pencil habit sketches drawn superbly well by this renowned artist. In some instances this is the first time that these plants have been reproduced in colour anywhere. In this volume the authors have also included species from other parts of the world for comparative interest.’
