A collection of 11 handwritten letters by Maurice van Esshe (1906-1977), a Belgian-born South African painter and influential art educator who played a major role in developing the modern art movement in South Africa.
The letters are addressed to his friend William "Bill" Hibbard, who, at the period, was considered South Africa's foremost collector of coins, medallions, firearms, edged weapons and art. He was also the author of the definitive book on the tribute medals of the Anglo-Boer War. Hibbard was the chief administrative research officer at the University of Cape Town and Van Esshe's envelopes all bear the address "Administration Offices, University of Cape Town".
Hibbard appears to have been a very close friend of Van Essche, as he was entrusted with the delicate task of regularly sending the artist his medication via airmail to his various European addresses. In his later life Van Essche suffered from a weak heart.
The contents are mainly about the University of Cape Town (U.C.T.), his painting and exhibitions in Europe, his travels, and his failing health.
Maurice van Essche's artworks generally sell at auction from R70,000 to over R800,000 (ZAR) depending on the size, medium, and subject matter.
